SAWED, has been working from past 15 years
with local community to Conserve Bio-diversity.
We providing training on Improved Agriculture
Methods, Watershed Management, Importance of
Rain Water Harvesting, and Organic Farming to
Small and Marginal Farmers.
SAWED, promoted Community Nursery to meet the
needs of local farmers. We also distributed more
than 3.2 lakhs tree seedlings to the small and
marginal farmers in Theni , Dindigul, Karaikal
District. Many traditional seed varieties were
disappearing in rural areas, So we initiated
many programmes like community seed banks,
kitchen garden to protect traditional varieties
in villages.
SAWED, adopted the Eco-Club program in
schools and colleges in Theni , Dindigul,
Karaikal District. Through this program we
donated 750 Tree guards and Sawed is also organising school students, college students campaign againt polythene products and polythene waste disposal in Theni and Karaikal
District.

SIRUMALAI HILL PROJECT:
SAWED Trust has also taken some initiative in Environment and Wildlife Protection and Conservation
in Sirumalai and Lower Palani malai hills in Dindigul district.
Sirumalai hills is roughly 1350 meters high and spreads over 317 Square kilometers.
In this a third of this greenery is private revenue land on which they grow coffee, cardamom,
black pepper, banana, lemon, jack fruit, chuv chuv etc. This hill is known for its rich natural
wealth particularly for abudant medicinal plants. Tribals have been living in clusters at Ponnurukki,
Aralikadu, Velampanai, Thalakarai, Thenmalai, Vellimalai and many hamlets in lower hills of sirumalai.
They depend only forest produce like date palm tree leaves for making broom stick, lime, amla, honey,
medicinal plants etc. for their income.
But due to frequent failure of monsoon and a systematic emasculation of forest wealth, converting
large tracts of forest land into cultivable land, change in climatic condition, massive shifting towards
mono-cropping pattern, denudation of flower-bearing trees and waning multi-cropping pattern affected the
eco-system and disturbed the habit of various natural friendly organism. A massive felling of trees reduced
the forest cover. So in order to conserve Environment and its wildlife, SAWED is providing awareness education
on present ecology and how the future generation would be affected by several harmful effects including water
scarcity, landslip, soil erosion and loss of biodiversity to tribals and general public living in villages of
these forest and also providing tree saplings to plant in these hills at free of cost.
