Title: Reaching the Tribes Through Mobile Clinic.

Location: Pandrimalai Hills, Dindigul District, Tamilnadu, India.

The majority of the target population are tribes, who are bonded labours in coffee estates. Basic healthcare is not accessible or not affordable. Common health problems in the area include tuberculosis, leprosy, cholera, scabies, diarrhoea and malnutrition. In addition, many villagers sustain injuries while working on farms. Poverty and lack of awareness about health care, combined with ignorance and superstition, results in a high infant and maternal mortality rate in all villages.

SAWED regularly holds clinics in these tribal villages. Our doctor and nurse visit these tribal villages via motorbike once in a month. The clinics are held in temporary tents in the villages. Usually a large number of patients, most of them are women and children come for treatment. Lab work and surgery are not possible. Only basic medicine and advice can be administered.

With the proposed mobile clinic, many other conditions can be treated and there will be a lab where some basic testing will be possible. The vehicle will feature clean private examining room, where confidential examinations and some simple basic surgery can be performed. An office with medical textbooks, a filing cabinet will make it possible to keep patient records.

To implement this project, SAWED desperately need a vehicle. The vehicle costs around $28,500. The running cost of the project can be managed by SAWED Trust through its Income Generation Projects Fund.
