CURRENT APPEAL:

Title: School Construction Program.

Location: Kodai Road, Dindigul District, Tamilnadu, India.

Total Project Need - $ 5,50,950

In consequence of the tsunami that has taken place in the Indian Ocean in December 2004, India was among those countries in Southern Asia, which have been affected the most. The coastal areas of the south-eastern provinces were heavily affected by that disaster and a large number of families lost their homes along that coastal area. Unfortunately more than three years after the tsunami not enough efforts have been directed to restore hope and confidence of the tsunami victims especially children.

The Project aims to ensure a sustainable support of children and to stand on their own feet in the future. This project will provide Residential Education to tsunami affected children’s and underprivileged rural children’s.

Goals and Objectives:

The goal of the proposed Two-year program is two fold:

(1). To Purchase 10 Acres of Land and to build 21,420 Sq.ft R.C.C Residential School Building.
(2). To provide Quality Education to children with knowledge and literary skills.

Specific Objective:

1. To help young people successfully learn, stay in our residential school and prepare for life.
2. To equip children with high moral values and to inculcate the confidence to act in that direction.
3. To promote mass- scale quality education at the primary and secondary levels in an environment that encourages intellectual and spiritual growth.
4. To provide food and shelter to the children.

Program Area:

SAWED conducted an assessment to target the areas that have the greatest need and for which there are gaps in coverage. We selected the program areas according to three criteria: most severely damaged, paucity of post-tsunami services, local people’s motivation to participate. SAWED plans to implement the Residential School project for the Benefits of

(a) Tsunami affected villages of Karaikal and Nagapattinam District
(b). Drought affected and Economically most Backward Dindigul , Theni and Madurai District

In Karaikal and Nagapattinam areas, fishing and fishing related activities such as drying and selling fish are the principal means of livelihood. In Dindigul, Theni and Madurai areas, agriculture and agriculture related activities are the principal means of livelihood.

Activities:

SAWED Residential School Program seeks to bring about a qualitative and quantitative change in the education sector through:

1. A relevant and comprehensive curriculum. 2. An effective teachers training program. 3. A teaching method that helps children understands, recognize, reason and enjoy the learning process. 4. Purpose-built schools with all facilities necessary to create a stimulating learning environment. 5. An effective system of monitoring and evaluation.

Curriculum has been designed to provide quality education that is modern in its approach yet traditional in its values. It promotes an interactive approach that is child –centered.

The school will follow a relevant and comprehensive curriculum, which is in line with the officially prescribed syllabus by the board of our region. However, this syllabus is suitably modified and regularly updated to meet the demands of modern-day education. English and mathematics text books of a government approved private publisher are used in the sawed curriculum. To further enhance the syllabus and facilitate our teachers to teach effectively, guide lessons for all prescribed textbooks are prepared by SAWED.

SAWED believes in the holistic development of the child and therefore extra-curricular activities form an integral part of the curriculum along with reading , computers, art and educational field trips. Activities such as debates, essays, art, naat and qirat competitions along with sports form an integral part of the academic calendar.

The Program’s educational content and faculty’s teaching methods are both periodically assessed through teacher’s daily diaries, regular monitoring and independent evaluations to ensure that the quality of education is upto SAWED quality standards.

Expected Outcomes:

The expected outcomes of the program include: a.Education, that will give them hope for a better future. b.Education, a chance to change their lives. c.Education increases access to better paid jobs. d.Education enhances self-esteem and confidence. e.Education enables better money management. f.Education means greater productivity on a national scale. g.Education encourages later marriage and smaller families.

Education of parents has greater total effect on child mortality than any other factor. One year of a mother’s education has been associated with a 9% decrease in under 5 mortality. Teaching mothers to read can lead to a decrease in infant mortality of up to 50%.

People who can read are better able to get involved in the society of which they are a part.

We are seeking your kind help and cooperation in raising funds for this very important cause. You can donate a part of amount to the construction of the school either individually or together with friends or your organisation.
